SENIORS: Learn about CARP - and learn to protect your money

Tri-City seniors, you can learn: how to avoid annoying telemarketing calls when you are eating dinner; who can help when you have a consumer complaint; and how to protect yourself from fraudulent or bankrupt travel agencies.

Tri-City seniors, you can learn:

how to avoid annoying telemarketing calls when you are eating dinner;

who can help when you have a consumer complaint;

and how to protect yourself from fraudulent or bankrupt travel agencies.

That information and more will be covered at the next meeting of the North Fraser Chapter CARP (A New Vision of Aging for Canada). The group, which covers the Tri-Cities, meets at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 17 Cameron rec centre, 9523 Cameron St., Burnaby (across from Lougheed Town Centre).

North Fraser Chapter is holding its annual general meeting to elect directors for a one- or two-year term and conduct other business (all are welcome to attend but only members can vote). Light refreshments will precede the AGM.

After the short formal meeting, participants will hear a presentation by Consumer Protection BC, a not-for-profit corporation that protects consumers and encourages a fair marketplace in British Columbia. Its representatives will explain:

rules governing telemarketers;

Canada's Do Not Call List;

the Travel Fund;

and other consumer issues.

CARP is a national, non-partisan, non-profit organization for seniors. The North Fraser Chapter represents members in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore and Belcarra as well as Burnaby, Maple Ridge, New Westminster and Pitt Meadows.
