SIGN ME UP: Plenty of volunteer opportunities

Helping local seniors who may be isolated or have difficulty getting their own groceries is a rewarding activity for those who like to volunteer.

Helping local seniors who may be isolated or have difficulty getting their own groceries is a rewarding activity for those who like to volunteer. Community Volunteer Services for Seniors (CVSS) is the organization to get in touch with to find out how to get involved with the visiting program, the grocery program and the telephone reassurance program.

Currently, CVSS is looking for 25 volunteers (age 40 plus, 8 male and 17 female) to visit seniors who are isolated and lonely, living in the Tri-Cities area. These seniors are very interesting people who would enjoy sharing their stories and hobbies with a friendly visitor. Ladies are matched with ladies, and gentlemen are matched with gentlemen.

These seniors are patiently waiting for a friendly visitor to spend some time with.

Here are a few of our seniors who are eagerly waiting to share one and a half to two hours a week with a volunteer visitor who shares similar interests;

78 year old lady, a retired RN, would like to meet with a volunteer who would enjoy going out for walks together.

67 year old lady, who has been waiting for a visitor for quite some time. Mandarin is her first language, however, she converses well in English.

80 year old lady, who has lived in many countries, would like a visitor to share her love of travel.

75 year old man, a retired Seaman who enjoys 50's music, would like spending time with a visitor and perhaps visits into the community.

95 year old lady, a retired LPN, would like a visitor to share a pleasant conversation with.

85 year old man, who loves Scrabble and card games, would like to visit with someone who also enjoys "the love of the game".

82 year old lady, who enjoys having visitors, would like to spend time with a visiting volunteer who speaks Polish or Russian.

74 year old lady, born on the Prairies, would like a visitor to go for walks with and friendly conversation.

CVSS will be holding its next volunteer orientation at Wilson Centre, 2150 Wilson Avenue, Port Coquitlam, on Oct. 23 and the registration deadline is Oct. 2.

For more information and to register for this rewarding volunteer experience, call Sue or Suzanne at 604-927-7919.

There are currently 170 volunteers participating in these programs and 170 seniors receiving services. CVSS is a non-profit organization funded by The United Way of the Lower Mainland, The Canada Safeway Foundation, and government gaming grants. CVSS operates under the Wilson Centre Seniors' Advisory Association, a registered Non-Profit Charitable Organization.
