An annual school district drama festival at Port Moody's Heritage Woods secondary this month resulted in that high school advancing to the provincials.
Adjudicator Susan Bertoia selected Heritage's Define: Love as the representative for School District 43 at the Sears Association of BC Drama Educators' (ABCDE) Festival.
She singled out the piece for its strong ensemble and solo work, said Riverside secondary drama teacher Nicole Roberge, who organized MetFest 2013 - a three-night showcase of one-act plays.
This year's MetFest saw an array of presentations from Tri-City high schools: Pinetree (Here We Are and Seeing the Light); Dr. Charles Best (Death); Gleneagle (Back to the Future); Terry Fox (The Actor's Nightmare); Heritage Woods (Colin's Play and Playbuilt); Centennial (The Potman); Riverside (Trojan Women, and 15-Minute Hamlet); and Archbishop Carney regional secondary (The Importance of Being Earnest).
The Sears ABCDE Festival happens April 30 to May 4, 2014, at Douglas College in New Westminster.
ln 2011, Port Coquitlam's Terry Fox secondary - under the direction of teacher Dan Tilsley - won four provincial accolades for outstanding acting in male and female roles in Putnam County Spelling Bee as well as outstanding choreography and musical virtuosity. And last year, the Riverside cast and crew of Grim won best visual design as well as outstanding ensemble.
