ARTS BRIEFS: Coq. festival reps place in provincials

A few artistic students from - or representing - the Tri-Cities scored well at last month's Performing Arts of BC festival.

A few artistic students from - or representing - the Tri-Cities scored well at last month's Performing Arts of BC festival.

Hannah Gee, of Burnaby, who was the intermediate representative in classical voice for the Coquitlam District Music Festival (CDMF), placed first in the provincials in the intermediate Canadian classical voice class.

She also took the runner-up title in the same category overall.

Port Moody's Tiana Jung, 15, representing CDMF in senior musical theatre, took third prize at her session - "a huge accomplishment," her mother, Elisa, said, given the Grade 9 PoMo secondary student was up against more mature competitors.

The provincials saw hundreds of young creative talent from around B.C. descend on Chilliwack to compete in their respective fields.

PAINTING

A new six-week painting class has been added to the summer program at Coquitlam's Dogwood Pavilion.

Painting: Exploring Acrylics will be offered from July 1 to Aug. 6, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the seniors' centre on Poirier Street.

Instructor Eileen Harder will give demonstrations and one-on-one instruction. Call 604-927-4386 to sign up.

JAPAN ART

The deadline is next Wednesday for young Tri-City artists wanting to have their work entered into a permanent exhibit in Japan.

Youth aged five to 15 are invited to submit their pieces to visual artist Diane Moran, who is a guest curator of the Hamada Children's Museum of Art in Japan.

She is looking for kids to enter a two-dimentional piece in any media, including paintings, drawings, collage and mixed media on paper or canvas.

There is an open theme and Moran will decide what will go up on the walls at the Hamada Children's Independants Exhibition in Japan next February.

Winners will receive a certificate of appreciation from Japan and a DVD that features the entire 2014 exhibition from across the globe.

Email [email protected] for more information and to enter artwork by Wednesday, June 12 by 5 p.m.
