Arts in brief: Art classes for youth at ECC

Artist Judith M. Atkinson will lead a painting class for children aged seven to 12 at Coquitlam's Evergreen Cultural Centre next month. Creative Kids Summer Arts! runs in Studio B, Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to noon, from July 25 to 29.

TO MARKET

Artists and artisans will sell their wares at Port Coquitlam's farmers' market tomorrow (Thursday). Art at the Market takes place in the Leigh Square Community Arts Village (2253 Leigh Sq.) from 3 to 7 p.m. Among the items up for sale include pottery, paintings, photography and jewellery. COASTAL SINGS

Two Coquitlam-based children's choirs will be among the participating ensembles taking part in the Songs of the World festival next month. From July 4 to 9, the Coastal Sound Children's Touring Concert Choir as well as the Coastal Sound Youth Choir will perform at the Coastal Sound International Choral Festival, which opens at SFU. Other participants are the Green Bay Girls Choir (Wisconsin); Northland Youth Choir (Alaska); San Francisco Boys Chorus; Sarasota Young Voices; Summit Touring Choir (Ohio); and Young Naperville Singers (Illinois). The choirs will tour Metro Vancouver, with the Green Bay and Sarasota groups performing a lunchtime show at Coquitlam's Glen Pine Pavilion (1200 Glen Pine Crt.) on July 6. YOUNG OPERA

A society that teaches young people about opera is presenting a classic Greek tale in Port Coquitlam this week. The Young People's Opera Society (YPOS) of B.C. will showcase Pandora's Box at the Terry Fox Theatre (1260 Riverwood Gate) until July 3. About 20 youth from around Metro Vancouver are participating in Pandora's Box, which was written and arranged by Michael Jacobsen with music by Jacques Offenbach.
