More than 100 young classical musicians will perform in a holiday show at Coquitlam’s Evergreen Cultural Centre on Saturday.
The senior ensemble of the Coquitlam Youth Orchestra — a group founded and conducted by Coquitlam violist Reg Quiring — will play Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Opus 25 (with soloist Sue Wang) at 2:45 p.m. They will also entertain with Handel’s And The Glory from Messiah and Marche Slav by Tchaikovsky.
Prior, at noon, the juniors will kick off the fifth annual CYO concert with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture; Dance of the Hours by Ponchielli; A Bach Christmas (adapted and arranged by Susan Christiansen); and Symphony No. 1 (fourth movement) by Brahms.
The juniors will be followed, at 1:15 p.m., by the intermediate group with Copland’s Fanfare For The Common Man; Piano Concerto No. 2 in D-minor, Opus 40 (with Hajun Chang as soloist); Christmas Concerto, No. 8, Opus 6 by Correlli; and Mahler’s Entr’Acte on Themes by C.M. Weber.
Both Coquitlam soloists won the GVRD-wide CYO piano concert competition last spring, Quiring said.
