Musician Kayla Price will kick off a two-month fundraiser on Friday that’s being organized by leadership students at a Coquitlam high school.

The online event, called Viral Cause, is hosted by the ConX group at Gleneagle secondary and aims live-stream concerts and events in a bid to bring in more than $1,000 for the Backpack Buddies.

That organization fills backpacks for children with families in financial need.

“Our committee decided on Backpack Buddies because we all loved the initiative of helping provide meals and snacks to children, and to help out struggling families,” said co-organizer Leah Kyle, a Grade 11 student. “Especially during times of the pandemic, it has really hit hard on some families, and Backpack Buddies is a very warm and friendly local charity that we wanted to support.”

Price’s performance on April 2, at 7 p.m. via Instagram (_viralcause_), will be followed by:

Jewel Epp, April 9

• Amanda Cabralda, April 16

• Michelle Yung, April 30

Jian Ross, May 7

More performers are now being lined up, Kyle said; however, the finale takes place on May 28 through the group’s YouTube channel.

Also led by ConX students Catherine King, Cyrus Bharucha, Grace Kim, Jina Javid, Justin Kim, Mia Tognotti and Yu-Xing Lim, Kyle said they hope the fundraiser will “show people in our community that even if we are all physically separated from each other, our community can connect through supporting local artists and causes,” she said.
