Coquitlam drummer with SFU Pipe Band named best at Worlds

Coquitlam’s Reid Maxwell earned the accolade for the sixth time at the Scotland competition.

The Simon Fraser University (SFU) Pipe Band didn’t score the main prize in Scotland last week, but its lead drummer took the overall drumming title at the Worlds.

Coquitlam's Reid Maxwell earned the accolade for the sixth time — his fifth with SFU and once with the 78th Fraser Highlanders in Toronto. The prize is awarded to the SFU drum corps.

The SFU elite corps competed for two days in Glasgow, where Field Marshal Montgomery of Northern Ireland scooped up the 2022 championship — its 13th all-time victory — after its two Medleys and two MSRs performances.

ScottishPower, which includes Port Coquitlam pipers David and Shaunna Hilder, won first place in last Friday’s MSR show (Aug. 12).

A total of 14 bands competed in the Grade 1 competition, with SFU securing sixth position and ScottishPower in third spot.

Here are SFU musicians in the Tri-Cities (in alphabetical order):

  • Amanda Colwell, Coquitlam (drummer)
  • Zephan Knichel, Port Coquitlam (piper)
  • Jamie Kubasiewicz, Coquitlam (piper)
