A Coquitlam playwright will see the world premiere of her show next week.

Lani-Marie Carbonel was one of five playwrights whose short scripts was picked to be part of the Trinity Western University (TWU) series New Words, New Works.

Carbonel’s play Medium Auburn Cherry Crush tells the tale of Mia and Sonny, two young friends who help each other through tough times by watching telenovelas and dying their hair.

“I am so excited to see my work on stage,” Carbonel said in a news release. “It is especially thrilling to introduce audiences to a bit of my Latin culture, in a fun and accessible way.”

Between Feb. 1 and 5, the university’s theatre department — under the direction of Kerri Norris of New Westminster — will also perform

  • Wishing on a Steve by Emma Wiebe Giesbrecht
  • She Who Flew Too Close by Annie Zander
  • The Den-aisle by Braedon Grover Sunnes
