For this weekend's Culture Days, Port Coquitlam will mix digital art and literature by showing the best of Canadian book art.

The Alcuin Society returns to the Leigh Square Community Arts Village with a selection from its recent contest winners.

The exhibit, which opens on Saturday in the Gathering Place and includes photos of B.C. writers, is an example that Canada matters on the global stage, said board member Shelley Gruendler.

"The book industry in Canada is evolving, not dying as some people may think," she said, adding, "Production is going up and people are noticing the details in the quality of the paper, the new typefaces, the printing, the binding and the overall aesthetic."

Also at Leigh on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m., Markus Fahrner and Mike Toddington will expand on book art by showing how to make a mini book by using a Japanese needle-and-thread style binding.

The Fraser Valley Knitters' Guild will host a free knit-in while Michael King will paint and Diamond Zhou and Ilsoo MacLaurin will printmake.

Music, dance and storytelling will be provided by the Tri-City Chinese Community Society.
