For Culture Days at Coquitlam's Place des Arts on Sunday, faculty artist Joy Kirkwood will lead participants through the most recent photo show by Alan Maples and create artwork to accompany his images from northern India.

Exhibitions programmer Michelle Chan said the Visual Language Workshop will tie in nicely with the digital imagery and literature theme. "We already have the digital art from Alan so all people have to do it put words to them," Chan said. "We're hoping people will be inspired by the photos to put together their own work by using text cut out from old books."

And once the pieces are finished, they will be displayed next to Maples' Colors of Rajasthan photos.

Family Day runs Sept. 29 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Place des Arts (1120 Brunette Ave.). To reserve a spot, call 604-664-1636 or visit placedesarts.ca.

Party time

Located next to Place des Arts is Heritage Square, which is marking Culture Days with a movie screening and a birthday party.

On Friday at 7 p.m., Gord Stanfield's They Dream - an art film shot in part at Mackin House - will be shown at Place des Arts. Stanfield will be on hand to answer questions afterwards. To RSVP, call 604-516-6151 or email [email protected].

And on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., celebrate the 104th birthday of Mackin House as well as Coquitlam Heritage Society's fifth annual open house. Homemade goodies and activities will abound, plus music by Alouest and magic from Graham Kita.
