Kylah Powell is the first dance teacher at Place des Arts to have a faculty show at the Coquitlam facility.
And she's honoured to have been invited to perform at its inaugural on Saturday. "It's special that dance is included now," she said of the faculty series, "because dance is growing so much."
Since 2008, PdA has seen a 30% spike in dance registrations, a spokesperson said.
Powell, who teaches five dance classes at Evergreen Cultural Centre (a satellite campus of PdA) on Wednesdays and one session at the Maillardville hub each week, has recruited two professional dancers for her faculty event: Raychel MacAulay and Anne-Marie Ludwig.
MacAulay has studied at Quinte Ballet of Toronto, Nashville Ballet and Joffrey Ballet in New York while Ludwig (Alberta Ballet School, National Ballet School, York University) is the head of Dance Co.
Powell, a Port Coquitlam resident, said she won't talk to the audience during their performance but the dance will be interspersed with video clips of her past pieces.
Titled Something Old, Something New, the show will focus on past and new contemporary choreography by Powell and CollabArts Creations, which she co-founded in 2005.
