A Coquitlam-based theatre company that won a regional award last week for its inaugural show will follow up its successful run with a second production.
Next month, Align Entertainment mounts The Addams Family, a full-scale musical that includes a cast and crew made up of many Tri-City residents.
Among the leads is Avery Johnson, a 13-year-old Summit middle student who plays Pugsley Addams - the youngest child of Gomez and Morticia Addams.
The Grade 8 student, who takes acting, jazz and musical theatre classes at Lindbjerg Academy in Coquitlam, was asked to audition for the role.
"When I got the part, it was the happiest moment of my life," Johnson told The Tri-City News, adding, "This is my first major production and it means so much to me that I get to be a part of this wonderful show."
Directed by Lindbjerg's artistic director Chad Matchette, the musical centres around Pugley's sister, Wednesday Addams, who has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet and smart young man - the complete opposite of her macabre relatives.
Tensions rise when Wednesday brings her new boyfriend and his parents home for dinner.
"It's a show that has a lot of heart and at its core is about something that most of us can relate to... being part of a crazy family," Matchette said in a release.
Starring as Gomez and Morticia are Brennan Cuff and Laura Cowan Beattie.
Last year, Align Entertainment staged Shrek The Musical, which won an Ovation Award last Sunday for Outstanding Community Production - Large Theatre.
The Addams Family runs Feb. 6 to 21 at the Michael J. Fox Theatre (7373 Macpherson Ave., Burnaby). Tickets are $37.50/$25, or $15 on B.C. Family Day Feb. 9. Visit alignentertainment.ca.
