How Nice to Have a Hobby is an attempt to "address gender bias in the art world and barriers to be taken seriously as women artists," curator Danaca Ackerson said.

The show, which runs at the Leigh Square Community Arts Village, includes the art from Ackerson as well as Sima Elizabeth Shefrin, Crystal Smith, Lisa MacLean, Carlyn Yandle, Naznin Vriji-Babul, Adi Parker, Anne Gaze, Katherine Nielson, Tina Ozols, Karyn Wong, Joy Kirkwood, Krystle Coughlin, Tomoki Gomez, Lina Cutnam, Deanna Fogstrom, Suzy Birstein, Afuwa and Maggie Manning.

Professional artists, art groups and curators looking for a place to display their craft next year can apply for a space at Port Coquitlam's Leigh Square Community Arts Village.

Artists working in all mediums can enter as individuals or partner with other artists, non-profits or artist co-ops. And priority will be given to work that addresses community issues, relevant topics and/or involves community development.

The submission deadline is May 12.

YOUTH FEST

Tri-City teens have until April 17 to apply to be in the third annual Port Moody Youth ArtsFest.

Performers and artists aged 13 to 18 can showcase their musical, theatrical, dancing, filmmaking, literary and visual arts skills during the weekend gala, which takes place July 4 and 5 at Port Moody city hall in the Inlet Theatre.

Eight musicians from Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam have scored gold medals from the Royal Conservatory of Music.

The hardware is presented annually to students who have achieved top marks on their RCM exams.

Among the Tri-City musicians who received their medals on March 2 in Vancouver were: Port Coquitlam's Heidi Goetz (Grade 1 trumpet) and Coquitlam residents Angela Hu (Grade 4 piano); Olivia Hu (Grade 8 piano); Beno He Huang (Grade 7 cello); Mariya Orlenko (Grade 10 piano); Kaivon Rezaei (Grade 4 violin); Georgia Tuhten (Grade 5 flute); and Ron Vanier (Grade 1 violin).

Watch glass blowing demonstrations and take a bauble class at next weekend's Fraser Valley Bead Show in Coquitlam.

More than 50 vendors will be showing their wares on March 28 (2 to 8 p.m.), March 29 (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and March 30 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at the Executive Plaza Hotel (405 North Rd.).
