Lots of local wins at provincials

The Coastal Sound Youth Choir, under the direction of Carrie Tennant, won a choral section at the BC Performing Arts in Nanaimo this week.

Adjudicators at the provincial festival also named Coquitlam's Kristina Akester, 16, of danceLAB as the runner-up in the senior stage dance category, while her studio colleague Samantha Sadler, 17, of Port Moody, also took the runner-up position for senior modern dance.

PoMo resident Ben Freemantle, 16, of Caulfield School of Dance was the runner-up in senior ballet.

Meanwhile, representatives from the Coquitlam District Music Festival (CDMF) also took nods, with Vivian Sham winning the senior Canadian piano category.

Runners-up were: Emily Amaral (junior musical theatre); Madison Simms of Caulfield (junior vocal variety); Rebecca Jung (senior strings); and Adeline Cui (senior Shakespeare).

As well, honourable mentions were passed out to CDMF delegates Andre Poon (national piano); Emily Amaral (junior vocal variety); Gemma Blokzyl (junior speech arts); and Cui (senior speech arts).
