Tri-City MP James Moore officially announced federal funding last week for a number of local programs including for the arts and culture.
The Conservative MP for Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam said the $623,024 will help with Golden Spike Days ($32,800), the Evergreen Cultural Centre ($14,000) and la Société francophone de Maillardville ($59,000) for two years of Festival du Bois - one of the largest francophone events in the province.
As well, the cities of Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, the Port Moody Heritage Society and the Royal Canadian Legion in Coquitlam will share $30,800 to host Canada Day and historical events.
The Port Moody Heritage cash is to support the McKnight trench simulation, an exercise that has been the focus of stories in The Tri-City News recently, while the Coquitlam cash will go for Town Centre Park renovations to improve accessibility.
In addition, 45 groups will get a combined $363,088 in Canada Summer Jobs aid to hire 98 students. Among the organizations that will benefit will be the city of Coquitlam, the Tri-Cities' Chamber of Commerce and the Terry Fox Foundation.
"Our government is proud to partner with local organizations that connect our community through arts performances, celebrations of festivals and improvements to community centres," Moore said in a news release last Thursday.
"The Tri-Cities has a strong tradition of bringing together residents both young and old through vibrant local festivals and strong neighbourhood arts organizations."
