A new piano teacher at Coquitlam’s Place des Arts will commemorate the centenary of the First World World with music.
And Maria Jung will be joined by soprano Eve-Lyn de la Haye and her father, clarinetist Lawrence de la Haye, for the tribute on Saturday.
Titled Music of War, the performance launches this season’s classic concert series for the Maillardville venue and features repertoire in three languages: works in English by Butterworth, Guerney, Britten and McCabe; French pieces by Poulence and Debussy; and Spanish tunes by Granados.
The composers were selected because of their involvement in — or inspiration of — the Great War events.
“Even though this concert commemorates the 100th anniversary of WWI, war is still a constant,” Jung noted in a news release. “I’ve always felt strongly about how war has affected people throughout history and how it inspired artist to write sincere, beautiful music and poetry. I want to share some of these haunting melodies inspired by war with the audience so they can embrace the painful history and how it affected everyone.”
A former music faculty member of the University of Toronto, Jung has her master’s degree in piano performance and pedagogy. She recently graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music.
Eve-Lyn de la Haye’s credits include the Vancouver Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria and Calgary Opera while Lawrence de la Haye is a former member of the Banff Festival Orchestra, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Orchestra and the Okanagan Symphony.
