Music on tap at ECC next week

Evergreen Cultural Centre will be a music hub next week as the Coquitlam facility celebrates classical piano and violin, acoustic guitar, big band and woodwinds.

On Sunday, Australian native David Scheel will launch the sound parade with his The Art of the Pianist/Composer. The award-winning concert pianist will lead the audience on a journey of famous writers like Bach and Mozart as well as poke fun at opera and pop. He'll even entertain with on-the-spot pieces recommended by the crowd.

Jonathan J. Lee and Sergei Saratovsky will pair up for a violin-piano recital on Tuesday to play Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9, Opus 47 in A-major, Chausson's Poeme Opus 25 and Debussy's Sonata for Violin and Piano in G-minor. The event is presented by Prime Chamber Music Society.

For Halloween, pianist Sarah Hagen will take to the stage to launch her musical mornings, a series that has played out on Vancouver Island and is currently underway in Surrey.

Hagen will host five salon-style recitals over the next six months that include the following music luminaries:

cellist Ariel Barnes (formerly of theBorealis String Quartet);

violinist Martin Chalifour (a professor at theUniversity of Southern California's Thornton School of Music);

tenor Ken Lavigne (Canadian Tenors founder);

and Coquitlam resident Marcus Goddard (Vancouver Symphony Orchestra associate principal trumpet).

All performances are on Wednesdays, with coffee and pastries at 10 a.m. and the concert starting at 10:30 a.m. For Hagen's Oct. 31 solo event - themed around music of masquerades and mysteries - costumes are optional but encouraged. And for the first show, Evergreen members can get a guest in for free.

On Nov. 1, guitar affectionados can hear from the best acoustic players in the business at an International Guitar Night tour stop. See IGN founder and American guitar poet Brian Gore with guests Martin Taylor (British jazz), Solorazaf (French-Malagasy) and Guinga (Brazilian mix) perform their latest original compositions and exchange ideas about the craft. Earlier that night, Gore will also have a guitar workshop at 6 p.m. at Evergreen.

Dance the night away on Nov. 2 with music from the Inlet Jazz Big Band and the Harmony Vocal Ensemble at Coquitlam's Evergreen Cultural Centre.The two groups are appearing as part of a Coquitlam Gogos fundraiser, with proceeds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation grandmothers' campaign. A silent auction will be held and tote bags are for sale to raise money for the cause.

And lastly, the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble - which calls ECC home - will launch its season Nov. 3 with a concert titled Out of this World. Programmed with popular works, the event will be guest conducted by Gerald King, a professor and director of the School of Music at the University of Victoria, where he serves as conductor of the UVIC Wind Symphony.
