Pianist goes solo for next Coquitlam show

Heavy themes that played into German composer and pianist Johannes Brahms' works and life will be uncovered at a solo show in Coquitlam next week.

As part of her Musical Mornings series, pianist Sarah Hagen will speak about - and perform - eight of Brahms' "character pieces" that touch on topics like love and loss.

"He has a heavy life," Hagen said last week while in Halifax. "There's no way around it. His music is so full of hope even though he live a life of unrequited love. He felt he had to live this solitary life so he could concentrate on his writing."

Hagen said her classical music shows at the Evergreen Cultural Centre are growing in popularity. Last fall, she hosted cellist Rebecca Wenham, violinist David Gillham and piano duo Anagnoson & Kinton. Next up on the program are Nicholas Wright on violin (March 25) and tenor Benjamin Butterfield (April 15).

Hagen said dates are now being arranged for next season. "That's a sign of success," she said.

Tickets for Sarah Hagen's Brahms recital on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 10:30 a.m. are $20/$15. A reception at 10 a.m. includes coffee, tea and treats. Call 604-927-6555 for details.
