Piano duo to dazzle in Coquitlam

For her Coquitlam show next week, pianist Sarah Hagen will be taking a seat with the crowd at the Evergreen Cultural Centre.

Instead of playing with her featured guest, the Musical Mornings host plans to watch James Anagnoson and Leslie Kinton work their magic on the keyboards.

"I expect to be inspired and moved," Hagen told The Tri-City News last week. "They are individually and collectively formidable players."

Hagen said she was thrilled when the opportunity came up for the pair to play in her series in Coquitlam. Other than master classes with Kinton when she was a teen, Hagen has never performed with either pianist.

Anagnoson and Kinton have been together for nearly four decades and are recognized around the world for their skill.

The dean of the Glenn Gould School, where he is also on the faculty, Anagnoson is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and has his master's degree from The Julliard School in New York City.

Kinton, on the other hand, is also on faculty at Glenn Gould as well as being a piano professor at the University of Western Ontario. Kinton has his PhD in music theory from the University of Toronto.

For next Wednesday's recital in Coquitlam, the piano duo will play three works: Beethoven's Marches, Op. 10, Stravinsky's Petrushka and Two Slavonic Dances by Dvorak.

"It is such a treat to have the duo perform and I wanted them to have all the stage time," Hagen said.

Tickets for Musical Mornings on Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. start at $10. The concert begins with coffee, tea and treats. Call the Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way) box office at 604-927-6555 or visit evergreenculturalcentre.ca.
