A Port Moody secondary student was last week named the winner of both Emerging Talent competitions in Coquitlam.
Grade 12 student Jenny Kim clinched the coveted People's Choice award for her acrylic piece, Anchored, as well as the top prize for a film she produced with collaborator Young Lee.
Their short flick, called Ink, is about an average student who discovers a magical highlighter that answers questions while Anchored captures Kim's frustration with being overwhelmed; the painting style was inspired by Ryan Hewett, a well-known South African portrait artist.
Scooping both Emerging Talent awards "was completely unexpected and I am very taken aback by all the support," she told The Tri-City News, noting her wins include tickets to the Vancouver International Film Festival, a gift card to OPUS and a year-long Evergreen Cultural Centre membership - "all of which I will use with great appreciation."
Dozens of Grade 12 art students in School District 43 had their submissions featured in the art gallery at Evergreen earlier this year, showing 76 pieces in total. The visual arts show was juried by Jerry Pietrasko, Keith Levang and Kelly Selden. For the film component, Kim was up against other PoMo secondary competitors: Sam Mohseni, Sam Lai, Alyha Bardi, John Castrejon, Andrew Elliott and Rosie Hsueh.
