Port Coquitlam’s artist-in-residence wants people to slow down — if not for themselves, for the little people in the community.
“We’re a city full of families,” said Jennie Esdale, a mother of two toddlers. “We have to stop rushing around and take care in our surroundings.”
Her main project this month is to build a giant puppet to parade around the PoCo farmers’ market on Thursday, July 30.
Titled Spirit of our Children, the puppet will be an unusual display that she hopes will turn heads and give pause to market shoppers and vendors.
Esdale also hopes she gets some more hands to help her create the papier mache and fabric showcase.
On Thursdays, between 1 and 3 p.m., Esdale will lead free drop-in workshops in the Gathering Place at Leigh Square Community Arts Village (beside PoCo city hall).
Participants are asked to bring streamers, balloons, ribbons, kites, small towns or other objects to beautify the puppet.
Esdale, who ends her puppet and mask-making residency on Sept. 26, has been at Leigh Square since the spring. In April, she started her first residency but with her company, Green Fools Theatre, in Calgary, AB.
