Honourable mention: "Little Dolly"

Eugenie Kim, 16, Coquitlam

Little Dolly walks the street. Little Dolly cannot eat.

Her stomach, it gurgles, with rumbling aches,

Her arms, thin as twigs, continue to shake.

Uncanny, her eyes, they flit ‘round like flies,

Unseeing, they stare at each passerby.

Pale grey skin pulled thin over bone,

Out of her mouth come disquieting groans.

Little Dolly walks the street. Little Dolly cannot speak.

Her groans are a whisper, heard only by few,

Her lips, slightly parted, are pale and blue.

Tracks left by tears shine bright on her cheeks,

Every few seconds, another drop creeps.

With stumbling steps, she fumbles on by,

Slowly, she marches under grey sky.

Little Dolly walks the street. Little Dolly cannot sit.

Her path is set, trail endless and cold,

Her time has long passed, but she never grew old.

Instead, she kept walking, refusing to stop,

She walked through the forest, through golden wheat crops,

Through villages, towns, lively and not,

Through cities of concrete, where people forgot-

They forgot about Dolly, who walks the street,

They forgot about Dolly, who cannot eat,

Who cannot speak, who cannot sit,

Who never left these very streets.

Loathsome silence follows her wake,

Thin, bony fingers, around your wrist snake,

Feel her reach deep, for what’s hidden inside,

Feel her will pull—pull you aside,

Her hold is a shackle that drags you away,

With Little Dolly, you will now stay-

Little Dolly walks the street. Pray that you will never meet.
