Singer wins mall contest

A 21-year-old singer from Port Moody last month won a talent competition Lougheed mall. Frankie Cena beat out hundreds of singers who auditioned live and by video. Twelve candidates were picked on Aug. 24, with the winner's name announced Aug. 31.

Frankie Cena beat out hundreds of singers who auditioned live and by video. Twelve candidates were picked on Aug. 24, with the winner's name announced Aug. 31.

Cena clinched two tickets to this month's Madonna concert at Rogers Arena as well as a $500 gift card for Lougheed mall shopping and six weeks of recording time at Rock Start Academy, worth more than $4,000.

The Crossroads Coffeehouse kicks off another season of unplugged entertainment at Port Coquitlam's Leigh Square Community Arts Village this Friday with Lowry Olafson.

Olafson is a singer, songwriter and performer who has released nine CDs and has toured the world.

And on Sept. 28, Crossroads welcomes Bugsy Jive, an exciting quintet with three lead instruments and all five guys singing. Band members Devon Kazulin, Jamey Cloete, Kevin Penner, Scott Jorgenson and Matt Savourd perform an eclectic mix of southern rock to roots and blues.

Cost for entry is $5, with process supporting the Crossroads Hospice Society in ort Moody. The feature act starts at 9 p.m. at The Gathering Place (1100-2253 Leigh Sq., Port Coquitlam).

Tri-City resident Dale Kelly will direct the opening production for the Vagabond Players' season.

The group is presenting Ned Durango Comes To Big Oak, a comedy by Norm Foster about a small town that tries to put itself on the map and hires an aging TV cowboy star to lead their parade. The show runs Oct. 4 to 27 (Thursday to Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m.) at the Bernie Legge Theatre in Queen's Park in New Westminster.
