About 50 Place des Arts students under Cindy Sletmoen will be spreading the word about Music for Young Children (MYC) - a program that's celebrating its 35th year - while also raising cash for the BC Children's Hospital Foundation.

Sletmoen and her students are part of a province-wide initiative by MYC teachers and students, who will sing a new song composed by MYC teacher Bev Taylor of Victoria specifically for the Kids Helping Kids campaign.

Dressed in bright yellow T-shirts, the Coquitlam crew will launch their journey at 1 p.m. from the Maillardville arts hub and "busk" at each station from Braid to Waterfront. From there, the team will walk to the Olympic torch and sing the song one last time before returning to Place des Arts in Coquitlam.

"Since this is a significant anniversary for our Canadian music program, we decided to celebrate by earning money for sick kids at the BCCH in Vancouver," MYC provincial co-ordinator Wendy Guimont said in a news release.

The goal is to collect $10,000 by May 1 via practising pledges (Practice Makes Cents) and performing donations. As of Monday, their campaign had brought in more than $7,700. The total amount will be hwwanded over to the hospital in mid May, Guimont said.
