For its show at the Evergreen Cultural Centre on Saturday, the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble (PSWE) will give the audience what it wants.
At last month's recital, American Masterworks, the group had polled the crowd for its favourite pieces that PSWE had performed at the Coquitlam venue it calls home.
And seven of those works that won the most votes will be played at Whatever?! on Dec. 7 at 8 p.m.; however, the titles of those pieces won't be revealed until then.
"The content of the program is a secret for now," said conductor David Branter, PSWE's musical director and a Vancouver Community College instructor.
In fact, PSWE rehearsed eight audience pleasers for Whatever?! as two tunes had the same count; as a result, Saturday's crowd will pick which one will be heard.
Still, while the second half of the program will be light with band standards, marches and medleys, the first half will have a more serious tone with a concerto by an emerging artist.
A fifth-year student at the UBC School of Music majoring in trumpet performance, Andrew Lennox was named this year's youth soloist in the 11th annual competition sponsored by PSWE.
Lennox's credits include: the UBC-based brass quintet Echo Brass, the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, the Vancouver Oratorio Society, the West Coast Symphony and the Vancouver Youth Orchestra.
Meanwhile, PSWE has two concerts next year: That's Entertainment on Feb. 15 - a tribute to pop culture - and Pathways on June 7, featuring Fred Stride's Seaquam: Journey to the Sky and a new work penned by Branter.
