Tri-Cities Today: August 30, 2023

What's happening in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody on Aug. 30, 2023.
Argel MDR performs Aug. 30, 2023, outside of the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam.

Here's what's going on in the Tri-Cities for Wednesday, Aug. 30:

English Practice

Tri-Cities residents whose first language is not English — but are speaking at an intermediate/advanced level — can practice their skills with others from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the ParkLane Room at Port Moody city hall (100 Newport Dr.). Held in partnership with SHARE Family and Community Services, the group session is open for adults only.

Sail Away

See Argel Monte de Ramos — aka Argel MDR — perform outside the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam (1205 Pinetree Way) as part of the venue's free music series. The musician will be at ECC from noon to 1 p.m. to sing his new single, "Sail Away," which was featured in Spotify editorial playlists, including Fresh Finds Philippines. The Surrey resident was one of the Top 10 finalists of CBC’s Toyota Searchlight 2021, as well as the music winner of last year’s Surrey Art and Business Awards. He received a nomination as Pop Artist of the Year and an Excellence Award by a BIPOC artist from the 2021 Fraser Valley Music Awards, presented by CIVL Radio 101.7 FM.

Farmers Market

Get your grocery bags and tour the Port Moody Summer Farmers Market, on Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. until October in the parking lot next to the Port Moody Recreation Complex (300 Ioco Rd.). This week’s vendors include Rai Produce, Forstbauer Farm, Pastaggio and Bar Down Cookies.

Extra Hockey Gear?

If you’ve got sports gear gathering dust in your closets, pull them out and donate them to KidSport Tri-Cities. Between Aug. 30 and Sept. 8, the non-profit group is accepting donations of sporting equipment (no more than six years old) and bicycles for its next biannual sale: Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Poirier Forum. Drop off your old gear at:

  • Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St., front desk)
  • Port Coquitlam Community Centre (2150 Wilson Ave., Arena 3)
  • Port Moody Recreation Complex (300 Ioco Rd., front desk)
