Will the Coquitlam show be a farewell for Ballet Kelowna?

But, after that, the future of Ballet Kelowna is anyone's guess.

The small company that formed a decade ago - and once included Coquitlam dancer Brett Trach - may likely be giving a farewell show when its eight young dancers take to the Evergreen Cultural Centre stage on Sunday.

Only two months ago, president Jamie Maw and artistic director David LaHay announced Ballet Kelowna would suspend its operations on March 16 because of financial pressures.

Within a week, they stopped the swan song, saying they had found a temporary reprieve.

"The dancers and the staff, we all pulled together looking for ways to fulfill our tour commitments and finish off the season," LaHay told The Tri-City News last Friday, adding, "Our memberships have increased more than three-fold and donations are coming in at all levels so we really have to wait and see where we are financially at the year-end [in June].

"We're all pretty hopeful."

And its Passages production isn't one to be missed, especially with its poignant final dance called Journey out of Darkness - a piece that speaks about humanity and survival, "sort of emblematic given where we are right now," LaHay said. "Of course, it wasn't planned that way."

Passages features all eight Ballet Kelowna dancers - Clare Bassett, Desiree Bortolussi, Raelynn Heppell, Tarina Paquin, Jedidiah Duifhuis, Davin Luce, Eric Hall and Kurt Werner - and involves a mixed repertoire.

It includes: a classical pas de trois from Paquita "for the tutu and tiara crowd," LaHay said; the ballet's latest commissioned work called Double Variations (co-choreographed by Simone Orlando and Joe Laughlin); In Stride, a classical number with jazz steps set to pulsating music by Glenn Branca; and a pas de deux called Spring Waters "that is over in a heartbeat and you'll never, ever forget it," LaHay said.

Ballet Kelowna's Passages runs on Sunday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam). Tickets are $15/$30/$35 and available by calling the box office at 604-927-6555. Meanwhile, senior ballet students - aged 15 and up - can register to take part in a workshop with the company dancers on April 14 from 12:45 to 2:45 p.m. in the ECC Studio Theatre. The cost is $28. To RSVP a place, call 604-927-6552.
