A Coquitlam-based wind group will wind down its season with a show that will give the audience food for thought next weekend.
Conductor David Branter said the June 7 concert in Coquitlam by the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble will have a "contemplative program" - one that focuses on inner and outer exploration.
During its Pathways performance, the 45-piece band will serve up Three Revelations from the Lotus Sutra, a contemporary piece by the American composer Alfred Reed that's based on the scripture in the Mahayana Buddhism and looks at the soul and the quest to be perfect.
On the opposite end will be Seaquam: Journey to the Sky by the Vancouver musician Fred Stride.
As well, Branter will premiere the concert band version of the second movement of his unfinished work The Tribe Part 1. Titled I Remember Eric, the movement is a ballad to his lost friend. The Tribe Part 1 pays tribute to people in Branter's life and includes individual movements for his son and daughter, he said.
Branter expects PSWE will perform The Tribe Part 1 in its next season - in full - perhaps to open its first show on Nov. 9 that has the theme "Canadiana."
A classical and jazz saxophonist who is the department head at Vancouver Community College's School of Music, Branter said this past season for PSWE at the Evergreen Cultural Centre "has been a good one," with its largest crowd at the February That's Entertainment concert.
As for Pathways, "the music is really accessible and entertaining. There are gorgeous sounds and beautiful melodies," he said, noting the pieces will be accompanied by a multi-media visual presentation.
