A Coquitlam-based vocal group has been named as one of three finalists from across Canada to perform in the prestigious Association of Canadian Choral Communities (ACCC) competition.

The Coastal Sound Youth Choir, under the direction of Carrie Tennant, will sing in the amateur contest that used to be known as the CBC choral competition, said Diana Clark, artistic director of the Coastal Sound Music Academy (CSMA).

CSYC will be up against Chorale De La Salle (Robert Filion) of Ottawa and Medway Madrigal Singers (Jeff Beynon and Kathy McNaughton) of London, Ont., in the category of mixed-voice youth choirs.

The winners will be announced next month at Festival 500 Sharing the Voices, an international event featuring choral music, in St. John's, NL. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top performances in each category.

Meanwhile, CSMA will present Imaginary Extraordinary at Coquitlam's Evergreen Cultural Centre on Sunday.

The concert will include show tunes such as A Spoonful of Sugar and Pure Imagination as well as songs from The Great American Songbook, Daley and Rautavaara.

The 3 p.m. show on June 9 has CSMA children's and training choirs - with the Burnaby District Youth Choir - while the 7 p.m. event features Con Brio (all youth), Con Bella (all-girls) and children's and adult choirs.
