1. Take the plunge: Jump into the freezing Port Moody Inlet — and 2020 — with hundreds of swimmers (in bathing suits and costumes) for the annual Penguin Plunge at Rocky Point Park. Registration at the pier starts at 11:30 a.m. with the dip at 1 p.m. The annual spectacle is hosted by the Pleasantside Community Association. Proceeds from the $5 entry support the group’s programs at Old Orchard Hall. Hot beverages and treats will be available for purchase and Port Moody firefighters will be on hand.

2. Hike the Coquitlam Crunch: Perfect for New Year’s resolutions, the Coquitlam Crunch is a popular fitness challenge on this 2.2 km climb, which follows the BC Hydro right-of-way and extends to the top of Westwood Plateau — a 242 metre elevation gain. The Crunch can be accessed from Eagle Ridge Park, Guildford Way, Lansdowne Drive (two access points), David Avenue and Bramble Park at Panorama Drive

3. Visit Rocky Point Park and walk the Shoreline Trail: Recently upgraded, the trail around Port Moody Inlet is spectacular and good exercise for the whole family — and the family pet. It takes approximately two hours to walk the 6 km round-trip trail.
4. Take to the ice: The city of Coquitlam has some ice events on for the family at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St., Coquitlam). Stick, Ring and Puck (12 years and under) starts at 10:30 a.m.; family skate (all ages) is at noon and 2:15 p.m.; and adult casual hockey (ages over 18) is at 5 p.m. Call 604-927-4386 or visit coquitlam.ca.

5. Visit the Lights at Lafarge: As dusk approaches, approximately 4:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day, head to Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam to check out the amazing light displays that encircle the 1.2 km Lafarge Lake loop.They are designed into more than 10 zones, including a winter lights entry gate, 90-foot caterpillar, woodland garden, outdoor dining table illuminated by a chandelier, fantasy forest with an elfin tree house, lighted woodland creatures, illuminated maple leafs, salmon, floating lotus flowers and giant-sized mushrooms, beehive and flowers. 6. Cycle the Traboulay PoCo Trail. This Port Coquitlam trail is flat, picturesque and suitable for exploring anytime of year, including winter. It’s a 25.3 km route that encircles the community. Find out more here.
