A full list of family friendly events happening this summer in Port Coquitlam

There’s plenty of things to do this summer in Port Coquitlam, from art shows to performances and outdoor movies.

Canada Day celebrations might be over in Port Coquitlam.

But summer has just begun — and that means there is still tonnes left to do in the city.

Events include the Port Coquitlam Farmers Market, artists-in-residence workshops, art exhibitions, Hot Summer Nights with local fire crews, Cinema Under the Stars and more, according to a City of Port Coquitlam press release.

There’s something for everyone to enjoy this summer.

Here’s the list of fun activities

Port Coquitlam Farmers Market

The farmers market is running every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. on Kelly Avenue in the Terry Fox Hometown Square at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre.

The market features locally grown vegetables and fruit, home-made baking and artisan-made goods. Enjoy themes, events and performances for the whole family. Visit portcoquitlam.ca/farmersmarket for more information.

Artists-in-Residence

Join Lions Park artist-in-residence Sarah Hin Ching U, for free creative workshops at Lions Park. Stratum is an outdoor performance installation combining dance and textile arts, in which these two elements shape and transform each other during the process and performance itself. Art exhibitions

Stroll through the city’s gallery spaces this summer to take in four new art exhibitions:

  • Michael Wright Art Gallery: Recreations of Myth and Spirit by Samantha Harrison
  • Outlet Gallery: This Gift by Jeongmin Ahn
  • City Hall Gallery: Floral Bouquet by Lynda Walker
  • Port Coquitlam Community Centre: Colors of Culture by Shivani Singhal

Music in the park

It’s back! Enjoy the summer with free afternoon performances at Lions Park. Music in the Park features professional musicians from across Metro Vancouver playing a variety of genres including jazz, pop, rock, blues, folk, world fusion, and contemporary. All ages welcome - rain or shine from 2 – 4 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Sat., July 22 (Pride in PoCo Event)
  • Sat., July 29
  • Sat., Aug. 12

 

Cinema Under the Stars

Take part in an unforgettable Saturday or Sunday night experience at Cinema Under the Stars. Enjoy a movie for free on an enormous 40 feet tall screen. Pack a picnic, bring a blanket, round up some friends or bring the whole family to this outdoor movie night.

  • Saturdy, July 29 – 9:15 p.m. - Evergreen Park – Jumanji: The Next Level
  • Sunday, Aug. 20 – 8:45 p.m. - Gates Park – Super Mario Bros. Movie
  • Saturday, Aug. 26 – 8:45 p.m. - Evergreen Park – Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3

 

PoCo Spray Day

Come for a fun-filled afternoon with Port Coquitlam community police volunteers, Coquitlam RCMP, PoCo fire, and Metro Vancouver Transit Police with water games, misters, and the PCCC spray park.

Spray Day takes place Wednesday, Aug. 9 from 1– 3 p.m. at Terry Fox Hometown Square (PCCC)

Hot Summer Nights Program

Invite Port Coquitlam firefighters out to your neighbourhood for a talk, receive fire safety information, learn about fire extinguishers, smoke alarms and other topics. Also, a great opportunity to check out the rescue vehicles and equipment. Book online at portcoquitlam.ca/fireprogram.

Shaughnessy Pop-Up Park

Are you a musician or entertainer? Book the Shaughnessy Pop-Up Park stage for free this summer for events that benefit the community, such as live music. Picnic tables in the pop-up park are available for the public’s enjoyment. Book online at portcoquitlam.ca/popup.

Other free or low-cost outdoor activities available to residents this summer include:

  • Outdoor tennis, pickleball and sport courts are open (see the Facilities & Amenities link at portcoquitlam.ca/recreation),
  • More than 271 hectares of park and trails open dawn to dusk
  • Spray parks and outdoor pools:
  • Castle and Sun Valley Parks, and spray features at Lions Park and Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC), open 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily
  • Centennial, Routley, Sun Valley and Robert Hope Pool
  • Hours of operation may change by location and can be viewed online at portcoquitlam.ca/outdoorpools.
