Adoption day at SPCA Sunday

If it's time to bring a little more love into your home, BC SPCA 's Port Coquitlam office can help.

If it's time to bring a little more love into your home, BC SPCA's Port Coquitlam office can help.

The provincial organization's local education and adoption centre is hosting an animal-themed day of fun Sunday, May 6 as part of Adoption Awareness Month. In addition to getting a chance to check out the adorable pets who are looking for a happy home, visitors can take part in a scavenger hunt, get a shelter tour and even munch on a celebratory cake.

For those who already have pets, the Aussie Pet Mobile will be on site to offer pet nail trimming by donation.

Martine Campbell, general manager of the PoCo SPCA, said staff are expecting another shipment of animals on Friday but there will likely be about 25 to 30 animals - everything from cats and dogs to small animals and birds - available for adoption this weekend.

"The animals we receive are beautiful, loving creatures who are in our care through no fault of their own," said Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the BC SPCA, in a release. "They are with us because their guardians couldn't, or wouldn't, provide for their needs."

Despite the wide variety of companionable pets at the SPCA, only a small percentage of the pets acquired in the province come from shelters or rescue organizations, Chortyk added.

"We have animals of every size and description," Chortyk said. "The one thing they have in common is that they desperately want a family to call their own."

This month's adoption campaign focuses on the unique bond people share with their pets, using the slogan "Beautiful relationships start with adoption... Bring love home."

The BC SPCA open house at the Port Coquitlam Education and Adoption Centre (104-3278 Westwood St.) runs from 1 to 3 p.m. Visit www.spca.bc.ca for more information.
