Air quality bulletin issued for Tri-Cities

Metro Vancouver bulletin applies entire Lower Mainland due to stagnant weather system that is expected to trigger intermittent high concentrations of particulate matter over the weekend

The province has set up a site where residents of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody can sign up to receive advisories when air quality in the area becomes poor.

A stagnant weather pattern over the Lower Mainland and central Fraser Valley has led Metro Vancouver to issue an air quality bulletin due to intermittent high concentrations of particulate matter over the weekend.

The regional authority expects temperature inversions and light winds, especially in the evenings, allowing fine particulate matter to build up in the air.

Air quality bulletins are issued when pollutant levels are elevated but don’t exceed levels that would trigger an advisory. They are meant to encourage people to reduce emissions — whether through wood stoves, vehicles or outside — and inform people sensitive to polluted air.

Anyone with chronic underlying medical conditions should avoid strenuous outdoor exercise, particularly pregnant woman, infants, elderly and anyone with diabetes, and lung or heart disease.
