Artists look at dark, light sides of Mother Nature in new Coquitlam shows

Exhibits exploring the environment open at Coquitlam's Place des Arts on Friday, Nov. 3, 2023.

The heaviness and relief that Mother Nature offers are explored in new art exhibits that open tomorrow, Nov. 3, in Coquitlam.

Place des Arts (1120 Brunette Ave.) hosts a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. to celebrate the solo shows by Allison Barton Youssef and Brandi Williams.

Youssef’s photos in Beholden, which can be seen in the Leonore Peyton Salon until Dec. 21, are part of a collection she started during the COVID-19 pandemic to study the impacts of environmental change.

And, in the Mezzanine gallery, Williams’ display is titled A Lightness of Spirit, an observation of how the artist feels when she pays attention to nature, especially birds.

Her show is also a reflection of the impacts of the global health crisis that started in North America in March 2020.

Besides the finished artworks, Williams has included sketches drawn during the same creative period using graphite, charcoal, pen and ink as well as watercolour on paper.

Meanwhile, an online auction to support subsidized arts programs at Place des Arts ends on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 9 p.m.

The facility is hoping to raise $7,000 to help families in financial need.

Among the prizes on the virtual block are:

  • a two-night stay at Water’s Edge Shoreside Suites in Ucluelet
  • tickets to any 2024 Whitecaps FC match
  • Coquitlam Centre mall gift cards
  • a $500 gift card to Muse + Maven beauty studio
  • OPUS art supplies
