Coquitlam’s Austin Heights neighbourhood should have its grocery store back just in time for Christmas.
Ryan Beedie, president of the Beedie Group, which is building the store, said his company is on track to turn the building over to Sobeys, the owner of Safeway, in August.
“They will do a fit-out and merchandising,” he said during a Coquitlam council meeting Monday, adding: “[Sobeys’] plan is to open in September [or] October.”
Residents in the neighbourhood have been without a grocery store since 2017, when the old Safeway was knocked down to make way for redevelopment of the 91,500-sq. ft. property.
When the project is completed, it is expected to include two highrise towers that will bookend the site as well as the retail component.
