Coquitlam RCMP are investigating the sudden death of a one-year-old boy at a Coquitlam daycare.
Mounties and the BC Coroners Service have been at the scene of the home daycare at 1312 Shaughnessy St. near David Avenue since Monday morning.
Police and emergency services first responded to a 9-1-1 call from inside the residence at 11:40 a.m. Monday, according to RCMP spokeswoman Const. Kristina Biro.
The Shaughnessy Street address is advertised online as the Rattle-N-Roll Daycare operated by Maria McFerran but the phone number provided has since been disconnected.
Biro would not speculate on whether the daycare was operating legally or whether foul play was suspected in the child's death, but said that the incident "is not a public safety concern."
"We are committed to finding answers and we will be releasing information related to this investigation as it is safe and appropriate to do so," Biro said in an RCMP press release.
The Rattle-N-Roll Daycare is not licensed by the Fraser Health Authority, but in accordance with the health authority's guidelines, only those facilities which care for three or more children who are not related to the daycare operator or are not a sibling group need a license.
Const. Biro would not say how many children were under McFerran's care at the time of the child's death but said that the daycare operators were cooperating fully with investigators.
Tasha Schollen, a spokeswoman for the B.C. Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, said Wednesday that the special Child Death Review Unit of the BC Coroners Office would perform an autopsy, and Const. Biro confirmed Thursday that the autopsy had been completed but the results were not yet known.
