It's not known how many students will be returning — but one Coquitlam councillor says her daughter will be doing school at home

Back-to-school week weather will be warm and sunny, according to Environment Canada.

A full week of sunny weather will be greeting 32,000 returning students across School District 43, according to the most recent Environment Canada weather reports.

How many students will be returning to class is not publicly known as survey results have not been published.

But likely a majority will be returning based on surveys in other school districts, such as Richmond, where it was reported that 62% of elementary school parents have indicated their child will be returning to in-class instruction.

Teachers and support workers will head back to school tomorrow, Sept. 8, with students returnig for orientation on Thursday, Sept. 10.

In June, across most regions, only about 30% of students returned to classes where protocols were in place to distance students during COVID-19.

However, one Coquitlam parent is not going to be sending her daughter to school this week.

Coquitlam Coun. Bonita Zarrillo stated on Facebook that her family made the choice to keep her daughter home to do her schooling.

“Today we made the difficult decision not to have our child go back to school in September and to choose online learning.

"I know this is a difficult decision for so many families and there is no right answer here. Each child is different, each family’s needs are different and we are all doing our best.”

She also gave a shout out to thousands of teachers and support workers who will be returning to schools beginning, tomorrow.

According to Environment Canada, the weather will be warm and sunny all week.
