Hit the road on two wheels this summer and help keep your community safe by joining the Coquitlam RCMP's volunteer bike patrol program.
Volunteers act as an extra set of eyes and ears for the police and will observe, record and report anything suspicious — so don't expect to be going after criminals in hot pursuit.
"They're out there like a citizen-on-patrol unit," said Const. Jamie Phillipson. "They're there to observe and, if they see anything suspicious or observe a crime in progress, they're required to call us."
Shifts will vary depending on participants' availability but typically include day and evening shifts throughout the week. Volunteers, working in groups of at least two, will focus on areas that are considered "hot spots" but will also visit schools, parks and recreation centres.
A candidate must be at least 16 years old, a Canadian citizen and able to pass a basic security clearance, bike evaluation and interview. Equipment and training will be provided.
Applications are available at Coquitlam RCMP's community police stations or at the main detachment, and the submission deadline is Friday, April 29.
There is a mandatory evaluation session for all applicants on Saturday, May 7 from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. that will include classroom work and an outdoor session with the bikes.
