Bear pays Coquitlam school a visit

Students at Coquitlam's Gleneagle secondary were under lockdown yesterday morning after a student saw a bear outside the high school doors.

Principal Gerald Shong called a Code Yellow to stop the 1,275 students from leaving the school while two staff watched from the lobby to alert anyone arriving late, and escorted them inside the school.

At one point, the bruin walked right up to the front door, said School District 43 spokesperson Cheryl Quinton.

Police were notified and a conservation officer did a perimeter walk with the principal around the grounds at 11:40 a.m. The Code Yellow was lifted 15 minutes later, when the area was deemed safe.

Gleneagle students were sent home with a letter to parents about the wildlife trespasser, Quinton said.
