Coquitlam Little League and the city of Coquitlam are hosting a public viewing party Friday at Mackin Park (1046 Brunette Ave.) for Canada’s first game at the Little League World Series.

The first pitch in the game against Mexico will be thrown at 2 p.m. PT. (Note: the game time was switched from 3 p.m. due to several games Thursday being postponed because of storms in Pennsylvania)

The family-friendly event will feature two 60-inch TVs set up in a tent as well as free popcorn, while supplies last.

As well, TVs in the city’s recreation centres, the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex as well as the City Centre Aquatic Complex, will be tuned to the game.

Kathleen Vincent, Coquitlam’s corporate communications manager, said future public viewing opportunities will depend on how well Friday’s events go and how far the team progresses in the tournament.

The city will also be lighting the SkyTrain guideway pylons along Pinetree Way, and the fountain at Town Centre Park, in green and gold beginning tonight (Thursday), in honour of the Coquitlam team, which is representing Canada at the 16-team international tournament.

The John B Pub at 1000 Austin Ave. is also holding an adult-oriented viewing party beginning at 2 p.m. Friday.

And their menu features beef dip, which happens to be the nickname of Coquitlam slugger Matthew Shanley, who walloped a key homer in the team’s 6-3 win over Quebec to win the Canadian championship last Saturday, and belted seven homers during the team’s run through the provincial championships in July.
