A developer about to build a new apartment block in Coquitlam will including a welcoming feature for the area.

Last week, city council unanimously granted second and third reading to rezone 945 and 951 Charland Ave. for a proposed four-storey, 31-unit complex at Blue Mountain Street.

During a public hearing on July 22, Erin Davidson, executive director of the Austin Heights Business Improvement Association (BIA), told council her group is pleased to see the area redeveloped under the new Austin Heights Neighbourhood Plan and she supports the highrise, to be located south of the PetroCan gas station.

As well, Davidson congratulated the applicants for including a "Welcome to Austin Heights" sign on the southwest corner of its property - something that has been on the BIA's wish list for a while (the sign will be paid for by Blue Mountain Vistas Development Ltd. and Bella Vista Real Estate and maintained by the building's strata).

"You'll be able to see it as you drive up Blue Mountain Street," Davidson told The Tri-City News. "We just love the idea of having some kind of entrance sign to Austin Heights."

If approved by council, the apartment complex will be located just west of five properties for which council recently issued a development permit to build a four-storey, 88-unit apartment block.

Because Blue Mountain Vistas' properties are contaminated, the owners have agreed to remediate the land under environment ministry guidelines as well as seal the site with an underground parkade.

About half of the suites will be either accessible or adaptable for people with physical disabilities, according to a city report.
