Big signs should be posted at key Coquitlam intersections before voters head to the polls, a city councillor suggested this week.
Coun. Craig Hodge told council-in-committee on Monday he was disappointed with last month's turnout of 9.23% for the byelection to replace Linda Reimer and Selina Robinson.
Further, Hodge said he was especially dumbfounded some residents didn't know a byelection was happening on Oct. 26 - a sentiment also expressed by candidates on the campaign trail.
Hodge said he would like to see city council change its policy to allow for lawn signs to go up earlier than 10 days before the election - advance voting starts two weeks prior - and for the city to install large signs at six major locations as a reminder about the upcoming election.
The next municipal election is Nov. 15, 2014.
City manager Peter Steblin said the city clerk's office is now compiling a report to review how the byelection went.
"We owe it to the voters to make sure everyone is aware," Mayor Richard Stewart added.

STRIP MALL?
New plans to put retail businesses on a property some neighbours fought to save as residential were before the city's council-in-committee this week.
Tideways Developments is proposing a one-storey strip mall at 1649-1665 Como Lake Ave., a site that area homeowners successfully rallied in March 2011 to stop from being developed for commercial interests.
Tideways spokesperson Dionne Delasalle said he wants to consolidate the two lots, located west of the Chevron gas station at Poirier Street and across from Parkland elementary.
Delasalle told the committee he has yet to secure tenants but plans to consult with neighbours, many of whom in 2011 cited concerns about increased traffic and noise next to their homes.
