Three Summit middle school students are bringing home medals from a national science competition this week.
Janice Pang, a Grade 8 student, won gold in the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Prince Edward Island and will take home $1,500, a medal and a 64GB Blackberry Playbook.
Her project "Pre-exposing RAW264.7 Macrophages to Microbial Product, PAM3CSK4" was deemed the best in the country for her category.
For her win, the middle school student also earned a $500 Canadian Institutes of Health Research Challenge Award and a $4,000 scholarship to the University of Western Ontario.
Two other winners are Summit students, too. They are Carol He, in Grade 8, and Bennett Tan, in Grade 7. Their project "Can Antioxidants prevent free radical damage, and possibly extend life?" won a bronze Medal in their category. The two will share $300 and medals and each earned a $1,000 scholarship to the University of Western Ontario.
The students were a part of the school's Science Fair Club, mentored by Claudia Durand and vice-principal Devon Ross, and put in countless hours of their time to make these projects happen, said Ross.
"To make it to nationals and to win is huge," Ross said.
