The Tri-Cities branch of the Canadian Parents for French wants more public dialogue on School District 43 plans to cut $12.1 million in teachers, support staff, supplies and programs.

In a petition to SD 43 board chair Melissa Hyndes, the group is calling for three open mic meetings before May 31 to allow members of the public to comment on the proposed cuts.

On its website, CPF Tri-Cities president Heidi LeFaive asks members of the public to sign the online petition.

The petition reads:

"$12.1million in cuts to school programming, educators, and learning assistant support staff will hurt the quality of education in our community.

We call on the SD 43 Trustees to host and participate in three open-microphone community meetings before May 31st so parents, students, and members of the Tri-Cities community can provide feedback about the breadth and depth of these cuts."

As of Monday, the petition had 43 supporters on change.org and 25 signatures. More information can be found here.

A board meeting is schedule for tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. at Winslow Centre in Coquitlam and several groups plan to make a presentation. The district has planned to approve its 2013/'14 budget on May 7.
