Cash handed out to Coquitlam area schools for student activities

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, which has curbed extra-curricular activities, 78 schools and parent groups are getting a combined $695,120, with flexibility to allow them to hold events once it's safe to do so

Nearly $700,000 is being handed out to parent groups and schools in School District 43 to pay for extra-curricular activities for students.

Dozens of schools in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody will be receiving the funds based on the size of their school population, with the requirement that programs meet provincial health officer orders.

In all, 78 schools and parent groups across the Tri-Cities are getting a combined $695,120.

Some flexility has also been built in to enable organizations to delay projects or programs until they can do them safely.

The money, provided through Community Gaming Grant funds is typically used to provide support for extracurricular experiences such as student publications, grad ceremonies and sports or playground equipment as well as writing, drama and music clubs.
