Rogers laid the infrastructure for cell phone connection in the 2.5 km Burquitlam tunnel at no cost to TransLink, providing LTE and voice access to Rogers and Fido customers.

Some cellphone customers who use SkyTrain won’t lose their calls or internet connection when they enter the Burquitlam tunnel on the Evergreen Extension, thanks to an agreement between TransLink and Rogers Communications.

Rogers laid the infrastructure for cell phone connection in the 2.5 km tunnel at no cost to TransLink, providing LTE and voice access to Rogers and Fido customers.

As well, Rogers is paying TransLink for the access.

“Our customers have told us that a good transit experience includes being able to use their devices across our system,” stated Derrick Cheung, vice-president Strategic Sourcing and Real Estate, TransLink, in a press release.

“We’re pleased to have worked with Rogers to bring LTE connectivity to all of the Expo and Millennium line tunnels, which ensures Rogers and Fido customers can experience the convenience that consistent connectivity affords, and all passengers — regardless of carrier — have the safety and security of dialing 911 on their devices.”

TransLink hopes to announce additional carriers in the near future, according to a spokesperson.
