The driver involved in a crash on Como Lake Avenue on Dec. 8 that killed a pedestrian has been charged with refusing to provide a breath sample.

Coquitlam RCMP reported a Nissan Altima was heading west on Como Lake near Robinson Street when the driver lost control and the vehicle went up on to the curb, knocking down a lamp pole. The car finally came to a stop at an empty lot on the north side of the road.

Robert Readman, a 53-year-old Coquitlam man who was walking in the area, was hit in the collision and died at the scene.

As a result of the investigation by traffic services and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services, the driver, 30-year-old Dae Soo Shin of Coquitlam has been charged with refusing to provide breath samples while operating a motor vehicle resulting in the death of another person. He is due to appear in court on Jan. 22, 2015.

The investigation is ongoing and police are urging anyone who saw what happened shortly before the collision, or the crash itself, to contact traffic services investigators at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2014-35136.

So far in Coquitlam RCMP's December CounterAttack road safety campaign police have removed 22 drivers from the road who were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Police are urging people to plan ahead by using public transit, arranging a designated driver or taxi or calling Operation Red Nose at 1-877-604-6673.
