A child received minor injuries after he was hit by a car Monday morning in Port Moody while en route to school.

Local police were called to the 600-block of Ioco Road at about 8:20 a.m. where the 10-year-old boy was walking on the sidewalk heading east when he "unexpectedly ran into the roadway and was hit by a 2001 Toyota Corolla travelling west bound," said Const. Luke Van Winkel of Port Moody Police Department.

The driver stopped immediately and helped the child. Police said the 61-year-old driver was not speeding and that the collision was unavoidable. No charges are being sought.

Van Winkel said to ensure everyone uses caution while crossing roads and to use sidewalks. Pedestrian are also encouraged to take steps to be more visible by wearing reflective clips, bright clothing or carrying light-coloured umbrellas while walking in the rain.
