A pre-emptive strike by Coquitlam works crews seems to have avoided any major problems due to Sunday’s small snowfall and the freezing temperatures.
Public works manager Brad Lofgren said crews began applying salt to the city’s top priority routes Saturday morning and worked through the night to get as many streets pre-salted as possible. On Monday morning the crews began salting local roads as well.
“We are switching back to applying brine today [Monday] to roads that are dry enough for it because it last much longer than rock salt does,” said Lofgren in an email to The Tri-City News. “We did not experience any major issues over the weekend due to our pre-salting activities.
He added so far the city has used approximately 300 tons of salt and will continue to apply brine and salt while the cold weather lasts.
